Designing for the Season You’re In: The Summer Chaos Edition

Summer at home is a strange blend of barefoot bliss and absolute madness.

The kids are home. The fridge is empty again. The dining table’s covered in LEGO, sunscreen, and half-packed vacation bags. And you? You’re doing your best to work, rest, parent, and not lose your mind.

So let me say this clearly:

👉 Your home doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.
👉 And your summer doesn’t have to be calm to be sacred.

As a designer, I believe good design holds space for the life that’s happening inside it. And in summer? That life is loud.

Here’s how to bring peace and intention into the season you’re actually in:

1. Create a Summer Landing Zone

Shoes. Goggles. Sunglasses. Target returns. If it doesn’t have a spot, it’ll find the most inconvenient one.

Try this

Set up a summer catch-all by the door or mudroom. Baskets, hooks, a tray. Keep it loose, but defined.

2. Make the Kitchen Feel Like a Place You Want to Be

You’re going to be feeding people 86 times a day.
You deserve a space that feels life-giving, not just functional.

Try this

Fresh hand towel. Bowl of fruit or flowers. Diffuser by the sink. Wipe down the island and light a candle at 4pm—it’s the mom version of turning down service.

3. Give Your Room One Retreat-Worthy Touch

Everyone is home. All. Day. Long. And your room should not double as storage or punishment.

Try this

Clear your nightstand. Tuck in your bedding. Add a soft throw or linen spray. Your bedroom doesn’t need to be perfect—it needs to say, “You can rest here.”

4. Make Room for Beauty in the Mess

There will be sand. There will be laundry. There will be days when the house looks like it exploded.

Still—beauty can live here.

Try this

Keep one corner sacred. Style a tray. Make your bed. Light a candle. That’s your anchor. That’s your breath.

💬 Final Thoughts

Summer is full of real life. But your home doesn’t have to fall apart with it. A few small changes can create peace inside, even when everything outside feels a little wild.
